It's a sunny fall day at a child care center on the North Side of Chicago. A teacher of 4-year-olds helps some of the children sort by shape the colored leaves they have just collected. An assistant teacher adjusts Desmond's full-body brace as he pulls himself up at the water table to examine, with Caitlin and Jonah, the warm water and bubbles. In a dramatic play area, Molly pulls on a long ruffled silk slip while Re a baby cap perched on his head, curls up on a doll bed with his feet hanging over the end. "Hurry up," shouts Martina, who is wearing a football helmet, "we'll be late." Both teachers seem well aware of the events within the classroom as other children build with blocks or paint at the double easel. Enter any preschool classroom and you will likely find more than one adult engaged with young children. We smile when we see activities flow as smoothly as depicted above. If we are keen observers, we may even note how the members of the teaching team work together with the shared intentionality of facilitating spontaneous play and young children's exploration of materials, events, and people.
